Noi Bai airport to the Old Quarter, step by step
Noi Bai (HAN) sits about 45 minutes north of the Old Quarter. The airport itself is straightforward. The stress points are the arrivals hall touts and the ride into town, and both disappear once you know the steps and the fair prices.
From the plane to the street
- Immigration. Follow the signs to passport control. Have your passport and your e-Visa copy ready. Exempt visitors go through the same desks. Queues move faster than they look.
- Baggage. Belts are one floor down after immigration. Porters and SIM sellers may approach you here; a polite no is a complete sentence.
- Customs and out. Most visitors walk through the green channel. The doors open into the arrivals hall, which is where the noise starts.
- Money and data, briefly. Change only a small amount at the airport counters, their rates are noticeably worse than in town, or use an ATM. For data, an eSIM set up before you fly beats the airport SIM counters on price; see our eSIM and SIM guide.
- Choose your ride below, then leave. Ignore anyone inside the hall offering a taxi, a SIM or a tour. Official options are all outside or inside your apps.
The ride to the Old Quarter, fair prices
| Option | Fair price | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Bus 86 | 45,000 VND, official fare | The budget winner. Runs from both terminals to the city with stops near the Old Quarter, takes 60 to 80 minutes with luggage space. Pay the conductor, keep small notes ready. |
| Grab car | About 250,000 to 350,000 VND | The price in the app before you confirm is the price you pay. Walk to the app pickup point and match the plate, never the driver who finds you first. |
| Metered taxi | Similar range to Grab when the meter runs | Use the official taxi queue outside arrivals. The meter must be on before the car moves; if it stays off, get out and take the next car. |
| Prebooked private car | Quoted in writing before you fly | Best after a long night flight or with children. Our partner Bao Son Travel runs prebooked cars; message us on WhatsApp and the price comes back as a written quote, never a surprise at the curb. |
Prices checked 1 November 2026 against the published bus fare and typical app quotes that week. App prices move with demand; the number on your screen before you confirm is the one that counts.
The three arrivals hall rules
One, nobody legitimate sells tours, SIMs or rides by walking up to you indoors. Two, a price agreed per person, per 10 minutes or by a card shown at the end is a trap being set; agree one total price, in writing when you can. Three, if a dispute starts anyway, stay calm and call the tourism hotline 1800 599 920, or the police on 113. Our emergency card keeps every number on one page.
The fake Grab driver, and the real one
The classic version goes like this: a man in a green jacket finds you in the arrivals hall, says he is your Grab driver, shows a price typed on his phone, and walks you to a car. The demand at the end is 600,000 to 800,000 VND for a ride the app quotes at about 250,000 to 350,000 VND. The real driver never finds you first. You find him: order in the app, walk to the app pickup point, and match the plate and the driver's photo before you get in. If a stranger insists your booking is with him, cancel in the app and order again.
Booking a transfer in advance instead? A good one looks like this: the price is confirmed in writing before you fly, the meeting point is a named pillar or desk, the driver holds a board with your name, and the waiting rule if your flight is delayed is agreed in the same message thread. Anything vaguer is a promise you cannot check.
Fast Track, and late night arrivals
Paid Fast Track services skip the immigration queue only. They do not speed up your bags, so on a busy evening the saving is smaller than the sales pages suggest. And if you land late: bus 86 is not a 24 hour service, and published sources put the last departures anywhere between about 22:00 and 23:30, so after a late arrival plan on a Grab car or a prebooked car rather than the bus.
Going back to the airport
Leave the Old Quarter 3 hours before an international flight and 2 hours before a domestic one, more in rush hour or rain. Bus 86 runs back to Noi Bai from the city, and the same Grab and prebooked options apply. While you are here, the visa and entry page covers the paperwork side of the trip.
