Train Street and the West Edge
The western edge is where the Old Quarter exhales. Phung Hung runs under the railway arches, now painted with murals of old Hanoi, and the train streets of Le Duan and Tran Phu draw visitors to watch trains pass a breath from the houses, subject to the current access rules. From here the city opens toward the Temple of Literature, and toward our quiet basecamp streets just outside the quarter.
The closest street in this area is about 15 minutes on foot from Hoan Kiem Lake.

Just west of the quarter: Phan Dinh Phung avenue
The guild streets end where the grand avenues begin. A few minutes west of the Train Street edge, Phan Dinh Phung runs under two rows of ancient trees, and on a clear morning the sun comes straight down the empty road between the red festival banners. It is not one of the 49 guild streets and nothing is sold here; people come for the light. If you walk the quarter at dawn, this avenue is a fine place to end.
