Travel insurance for Vietnam, what actually matters
We are not insurance brokers and this page is general information, not advice. It exists because the same two claim stories repeat in Hanoi: a hospital bill nobody expected, and a motorbike accident the policy quietly excluded. Read your own policy wording for these four points before you fly.
The four clauses that decide everything
- Medical cover and evacuation. Private hospital care in Vietnam is good and not free, and a medical evacuation flight costs more than most trips. Look for strong medical limits and an assistance line that answers 24 hours a day, because that line, not the PDF, is what you use at 2am.
- The motorbike clause. Many policies exclude motorbike injuries unless you hold a licence valid for that bike in Vietnam, and some exclude riding entirely, even as a passenger. If you plan any riding, check this clause by name, and know that an international driving permit must match the motorcycle category.
- Activities and altitude. Trekking, diving, and Ha Giang loop style trips can sit outside a basic policy. Add the activity cover if your itinerary includes them.
- The excess and the paperwork rule. The excess is what you pay first on every claim. Insurers pay against documents: keep hospital invoices, police reports for theft, and receipts from day one, not from the day you claim.
Long stay visitors
If you are using the full 90 day e-Visa, a subscription style policy that renews monthly is often simpler than extending a fixed trip policy from the road. SafetyWing is the name travellers mention most in this category, built for nomads and long stays.
Partner link disclosure: if a partner button appears on this page, buying through it may earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. It never changes the guidance above, and the same policies exist on the provider's own site.
When something goes wrong anyway
Call your insurer's assistance line early, keep every document, and use our Hanoi emergency card for the numbers that matter: 115 for an ambulance, 113 for police, 1800 599 920 for the tourism hotline. Pair this page with the visa and entry guide and you have the paperwork side of the trip covered.
